In a remarkable achievement, two Indian educators, Deep Narayan Nayak, a primary school teacher from West Bengal, and Hari Krishna Patacharu, an English teacher from Andhra Pradesh, have made it to the top 50 shortlist for the Global Teacher Prize 2023. The announcement was made recently, showcasing their exceptional contributions to the field of education. The prestigious award celebrates educators from around the world, with the winner being chosen from the top 10 finalists.

On Wednesday 25 October 2023, Deep Narayan Nayak, a teacher hailing from West Bengal, was revealed as one of the top 10 finalists from among 130 countries competing for the prestigious USD 1 million Global Teacher Prize 2023.

Global Teacher Prize 2023:

The Global Teacher Prize, a USD 1-million annual award, is organised by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO and in collaboration with the UAE-based philanthropic organisation Dubai Cares. This esteemed recognition aims to acknowledge educators who have displayed extraordinary dedication and innovation in their teaching practices.

Competing on the World Stage:

The selection process for this year’s prize was highly competitive, with over 7,000 nominations and applications pouring in from 130 different countries around the world. The finalists, including Nayak and Patacharu, represent a global pool of talent and expertise in the teaching profession.

Meet Deep Narayan Nayak:

Deep Narayan Nayak, a teacher at the Tilka Manjhi Adivasi Free Primary School in Jamuria, Asansol, West Bengal, stood out for his innovative teaching methods that have had a transformative impact on underprivileged children facing significant educational and social challenges.

Meet Hari Krishna Patacharu:

Hari Krishna Patacharu, an English teacher at ZPHS Ilavaram in Bhattiprolu Mandal, Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, earned his place on the shortlist for his remarkable work in overcoming language barriers and enriching his students’ lives.

Global Platform for Educational Excellence:

The Global Teacher Prize, now in its eighth year, was established to recognise outstanding teachers who have made significant contributions to the profession while highlighting the pivotal role teachers play in society. The shortlisted educators are celebrated not only for their dedication but also for their innovative approaches to teaching, which have had a far-reaching impact on their students and communities.
